Why You Keep Snacking — and How to Fix It

We’ve all been there. You start the day strong with a good breakfast, but somewhere between lunch and dinner it all goes off track… a few snacks here, a biscuit there, then you’re not hungry for dinner — and suddenly you’re back at the biscuit tin before bed.

We see this pattern all the time — and it’s not a lack of willpower. It’s usually down to blood sugar dips, low protein intake, and poor meal timing.

Here’s what’s really going on 👇

🔹 Blood Sugar Dips

When you go too long without eating, your blood sugar drops. That’s when your body craves fast, sugary foods to bring energy back up.

🔹 Low Protein & Fibre

Most snacks and quick meals are low in protein and fibre — two nutrients that keep you feeling full and stable. Without them, you end up hungrier, quicker.

🔹 Convenience Wins

If biscuits and crisps are close by, you’ll grab them. Research shows the easier it is to reach, the more likely you are to eat it.

🔹 Eating on the Go

When you eat while rushing or distracted, your brain doesn’t register fullness properly — so cravings stay high later in the day.

Here’s How to Fix It

  1. Eat 3 balanced meals + 1 planned snack – this keeps blood sugar steady and stops afternoon crashes.

  2. Add protein and fibre to every meal – aim for around 30–40g of protein per meal (e.g. eggs, chicken, yoghurt, fish, tofu).

  3. Plan your snacks – instead of grabbing whatever’s nearby, have something ready: protein bar, fruit, boiled eggs, or Greek yoghurt.

  4. Don’t skip dinner – skipping meals leads to night-time snacking. Keep dinners simple but consistent.

  5. Evening swap – replace biscuits with something lighter like yoghurt and berries or a protein pudding.
